Background of the Study
Hashtag activism has emerged as a transformative force in Nigerian digital discourse, particularly on Twitter, where it serves as a catalyst for social and political change. Activists use hashtags to frame issues, mobilize support, and redefine semantic fields by introducing new meanings to existing terms. In Nigeria, Twitter movements have led to the recontextualization of words, imbuing them with symbolic power and altering public perception (Adeniyi, 2023). This study examines how hashtag activism influences semantic fields by analyzing the language used in political and social movements on Twitter. It explores the ways in which hashtags serve as vehicles for semantic innovation, transforming everyday language into tools of resistance and empowerment. The research situates these semantic shifts within the broader context of digital activism, considering factors such as cultural identity, media framing, and audience reception. By investigating the interplay between activism and language, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how digital rhetoric reshapes meaning in contemporary Nigerian society (Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the evident impact of hashtag activism on language, there is limited research on how Twitter movements in Nigeria redefine semantic fields. Existing studies primarily focus on the political implications of activism, overlooking the linguistic transformations that occur as a result. This gap impedes our understanding of the mechanisms through which digital activism drives semantic change. The current study addresses this issue by analyzing the language of hashtag movements, examining how new meanings emerge and influence public discourse in Nigeria (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze semantic changes driven by hashtag activism on Twitter.
To examine the mechanisms by which hashtags redefine semantic fields.
To evaluate the impact of these changes on public discourse.
Research Questions:
What semantic shifts are associated with hashtag activism in Nigeria?
How do digital movements transform existing semantic fields?
What are the broader implications of these changes for language use?
Significance of the Study
This study provides valuable insights into the intersection of activism and language, offering a nuanced analysis of how digital movements reshape semantic fields. Its findings are pertinent to linguists, political analysts, and social media strategists, enhancing our understanding of digital discourse (Adeniyi, 2023).
